Frequently asked questions

How long will I be in counselling?

It depends on you.  Sometimes the things you want to deal with can be resolved in a few- maybe 6 sessions.  It is even possible a single session may help.  In other cases, you may want longer to understand why things are the way they are with you, or you may find different issues unfolding as we work together.  We will review your progress after 6 weeks, and then from time to time during your therapy.

Where will the counselling take place?

It is important that you are able to work undisturbed, with privacy, and that you have a strong internet connexion or telephone signal.  Most people choose to work from the same place every session, in a suitable room in their homes.  Sometimes clients have felt comfortable sitting outside, or in their cars. I am always in my office when working.

What happens?

Initially I will telephone you for a free initial consultation, about 30 minutes, to allow you to decide if counselling with me is right for you.  If you decide to commit to counselling, then we agree a day, time and frequency of sessions.  We also agree which method of communication suits you best.

I take basic personal details, including emergency contact and GP details.

I also ask you to read and sign a Consent Form.

Sessions last for 50 minutes. You are in control of what we talk about. As an Integrative counsellor, I adapt the way I work to meet your needs.

How private is counselling?

Everything we discuss is completely confidential, unless you tell me something that makes me believe you might be in immediate danger of hurting yourself or someone else. In cases where there could be a safeguarding issue, for example a child or other vulnerable person is at risk, I would need to disclose that to the relevant agencies. I would always approach these instances with sensitivity and include you in the process where at all possible. I am also required by law to disclose information connected with terrorism and money laundering.

I meet with my supervisor on a regular basis, and the work with you will be discussed in a professional and anonymous way.  Any records that are kept, are anonymous and securely stored, and are shredded when our work ends.

Online work is encrypted.

I comply with the Data Protection Act.
